Why I started streaming
As some of you will know, I’ve been a content creator on Twitch for almost a year now. While I have limited myself to only streaming Clash of Clans, it’s such a diverse game that I can honestly say, I’ve never struggled for great content.
Anyway, I had been thinking about streaming for the longest time but didn’t have a clue how to start. This is where I give a mention to Carbon Fin via Clash School. I won’t go into too much detail on this as I am going to write a post on Clash School very soon however I will say that without him, I would probably still be struggling to get set up!
If I had to give my main driver to stream, it is probably to build an amazing community of clashers. If you’ve been by my stream then you’ll know that mission is accomplished!
Before you get to reading on, I have gone into a lot more detail in the below YouTube video. As you’ll see from watching it, I can’t possibly have covered all points in a blog post. Having said that I still urge you to read on as this will give you, in my opinion, the essentials to being a successful content creator.
Why do you want to stream?
There are almost 10 million active content creators on Twitch right now. Let that sink in for a second. Insane, right? Everyone has their own individual reasons to start streaming and let me tell you now, there is no wrong reason.
Whether it be, like me, building a community or you just want to be rich and famous (good luck!), there’s a few fundamentals that I recommend you follow.
Getting started
Contrary to what you may find from Googling, you don’t need super expensive equipment. Some of the best content creators started out by just using a phone and a microphone. No judgment from me as everyone has to start somewhere!
If you did choose to go down the more “premium” route then I’ll help you out by listing out all of the equipment that I use.
Razer Blade 15 laptop
While I went with a pretty pricey gaming laptop, so long as you have a computer with 8GB+ RAM and plenty of USB ports, you will be just fine.
Blue Yeti Nano Microphone
This is seen as a mid level USB microphone while still giving crystal clear sound quality. Although this was my choice of mic, you could just as easily use a headset mic. Having one as a standalone is more a “nice to have” than an essential.
Elgato HD60S
There are alternatives out there such as Airserver but for a stable connection from iPad to laptop, I swear by this as the ultimate capture card.
Razer Kiyo
This is the webcam that I settled on after a little research. It has a built in ring light and I like to think gives excellent video quality for a mid range camera. So long as you get a cam that records/streams in 1080p, you’ll be fine with whatever you choose.
Elgato Stream Deck
Much like the microphone I use, this is another non-essential. I use this to easily switch between scenes on my overlay although honestly, it doesn’t do anything I can’t do by just clicking on the screen with my mouse.
OBS
While this isn’t equipment, it is essential software for streaming from a laptop/PC. You’ll be happy to hear that this is free to download and use and relatively easy to set up. A quick Google search will give you tons of resources to make the most of your stream.
Going live
Alright, so you’ve got your equipment and set up OBS. Now what?
Well, you need to decide what kind of content you want to deliver. Do you want to be an esports caster? Would you prefer to just chill with viewers? How about hosting tournaments? There are a ton of different approaches you could take but it all depends on what YOU have a passion for as to the best way forward for you.
Whatever you decide, be sure to reflect that in your stream title. If you want people to watch you and stick around, let them know in a few words what to expect. Click bait can work but I find that honesty about your content is important to keeping your new viewers from leaving.
Another common mistake that you’ll see from streamers is that if nobody in chat is talking, they go quiet. Please don’t do that! In order to leave yourself open for viewer interaction, don’t make things awkward for them. Keep chatting away to yourself if you have to. Put yourself in a viewers shoes. Would you stick around in a stream if it was just awkward silence?
Most importantly…
Whatever you choose to stream, whoever your target audience, whatever time you choose to invest… HAVE FUN!!! At least when you start out, streaming won’t be a job and it shouldn’t feel like one.
I know that this has been a pretty long read and it won’t cover half of what you may want to know but I do hope it has at least answered some of your questions. For more in-depth hints and tips, check out the YouTube video that I recorded specifically to accompany this blog post.
